Georgia – Gudauri – 2018

Gudauri – Kobi gondola lift

The valley elevator between Gudauri and the city of Kobi is made up of three gondola lifts and makes snow-covered areas accessible without the constraints of the road traffic conditions, which would frequently block access to Kobi.

More about

The project

The highest ski resort in Georgia, the flagship snow destination for freeride and heliski beginners, Gudauri is also popular in summer for its environment and mountains. With this new system, the resort can now host a 4-season operation.

While the Kobi-Gudauri ski lift helps to develop the tourist activity of the region, it also has uses in suburban transport. The city’s proximity to the Georgian capital Tbilisi and the Russian border makes it a major crossing point via the Jvari Pass. The same pass, which is often impassable in winter, used to cut the resort and the entire Kazbegi region off from the rest of Georgia. Thanks to this valley lift, this is no longer the case.

Many challenges had to be met! The POMA and PERI teams, the Georgian company in charge of the construction, joined forces in mobilising a hundred or so workers.

POMA, innovation

For the project

3 POMA
aerial systems

This ropeway is one of the 3 POMA sections to provide access to the entire ski area, including an intra-urban lift, with a total length of more than 7 km.

Gudauri’s connection with Kobi was very important for the development and growth of Gudauri’s ski resort.

An urban
gondola lift

The new ropeway system not only serves skiers in the Kobi region, but also public transport when, due to heavy snowfall, the Kobi pass is closed, to allow the locals to travel from Kazbegi to Gudauri.
