Transarc

The new 10-seater Villaroger gondola lift, located in the Villaroger sector of the Les Arcs ski area, represents a major step forward in the modernization of the ski area. This ambitious project replaces two fixed-grip chairlifts. As part of an overall development strategy, it aims to strengthen the backbone of the ski area by offering reliable, high-performance technology. Particular attention is being paid to passenger comfort, while ensuring successful environmental and aesthetic integration. This large-scale project also poses a number of specific technical challenges, particularly at the bottom station.

THE CURRENT DEVICE

Departing from Arc 1800 within Paradiski, Les Arcs Domaine Skiable, a subsidiary of Compagnie des Alpes, has replaced the famous Transarc. Increased throughput and comfort were the main issues motivating the technical choices for the new 10-seater gondola, like the EVO Wide cabins, which offer passengers plenty of space to enjoy a silent ride, even at the remarkable speed of 7m/s! In particular, the elongated station enables smooth, straight-line boarding for all types of user, at the reduced speed of 0.21 m/s. To carry 3,600 passengers per hour up to an altitude of 2,100 meters, with its majestic views from the Tarentaise to Mont Blanc, the new Transarc is equipped with DirectDrive® engines and the ECODRIVE solution. The 3.3-km, 2-section line has 10 fewer pylons than the old line. This investment is part of a modernization plan, with the replacement of 2 fixed-grip chairlifts by a single gondola lift at Villaroger, to optimize access to the resort from the eponymous village.

“The completion of the Transarc project represents a major milestone in the development of our mountain resort. This ambitious project, carried out with rigor and passion by our teams, is a testament to our commitment to offering quality infrastructures to our visitors. Building the Transarc was a real technical and logistical challenge. Thanks to the close collaboration between our partners, notably POMA, COMAG, SEMER and INGELO, and the local teams, we were able to overcome the obstacles and meet the deadlines. I would like to extend my warmest thanks to all those who contributed to this success, in particular our engineers, technicians and workers, whose dedication and professionalism were exemplary. Transarc is not only a technical feat, it’s also a significant step forward for our visitors’ experience. This new gondola, with its increased capacity (13 min vs. 20 min ascent) and improved comfort (10 seats), will reduce waiting time and offer a more pleasant ascent to the summits. Perfectly integrated into the site, and built to take account of strict environmental constraints, we are convinced that this new facility will contribute to the satisfaction of our customers. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone involved in this project. Together, we have created a work that will leave a lasting mark on the history of our mountain resort.”

LE VALLÉEN

AN EXTRAORDINARY NEW TRANSPORT SYSTEM

Conserving nature and protecting the mountains… it is by promoting public transport solutions and soft mobility that the commune of Saint-Gervais intends to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. And it’s by pooling our strengths and talents that the future will be greener and more serene. Preserving our natural heritage is an ongoing commitment for the resort.

The Ascenseur des Thermes, a wastewater elevator in the Parc Thermal inaugurated this summer, is just one of the infrastructures that make Saint-Gervais an example to follow.

Le Valléen reflects the ecological commitment made by the commune some twenty years ago. The aim is to provide residents and visitors with environmentally-friendly transport to and from the resort, whatever the season. This new means of transport links the Le Fayet SNCF station (departure and terminal for SNCF mainline trains, TGV, TER, Léman Express, Mont-Blanc Express) to the town center in just 5 minutes, making Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc the only French mountain resort and commune offering daily gondola access from major French and European rail routes.

Project success

Since its inauguration in September 2024, this urban gondola has been the subject of immense curiosity among Saint-Gervais residents, socio-professionals and regular visitors. The start of the Christmas vacations marked its real test, and the figures speak for themselves: 33,000 passages recorded during this vacation period, and over 90,000 people since opening. This represents a quarter of all visits to the Alpin, the former DMC, the second section linking the center of Saint-Gervais with the Bettex snow front. These results exceed all expectations. They reflect not only the enthusiasm of users, but also the relevance of a facility that meets concrete mobility needs. Jean-Marc Peillex, Mayor of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, is delighted: “This new facility has confirmed its usefulness right from the start, for holidaymakers, day skiers and local socio-professionals alike. With such encouraging figures, we see a real revolution in mobility in Saint-Gervais.

UNBEATABLE

In the heart of the village, Domaine Skiable Valmorel (DSV), a subsidiary of the Sofival group, is installing a brand new gondola lift for its main resort departure point, replacing a 4-seater chairlift dating from 1997. The Planchamp gondola lift is equipped with 75 latest-generation Evo 10-seater X-Line cabins, allowing a capacity of 3,600 passengers per hour in absolute comfort during the 4.5-minute journey, with superb views of the Savoyard valley.

For this major new installation, the entire line has been redesigned to meet all safety and comfort requirements: a single section instead of the previous two, an extended station and wide tracks for easy boarding by skiers, optimal travel time with a nominal speed of 7m/s (one of the fastest in France!), the possibility of operating all year round in winds of up to 25m/s, among a range of tailor-made technical and aesthetic options, for the main lift leaving from the village, which connects to the rest of the ski area via the Combe de Beaudin.

After the installation of the new Ariondaz gondola lift in 2017, Les 3 Vallées renewed its confidence in POMA for the construction of the emblematic new gondola lift at Les Grangettes.
