An APM, Automated People Mover, is a fully automatic system without drivers and usually moves along on a flat plane, which differentiates it from funicular railways. Unlike with automotive vehicles, the machinery and motor equipment are located remotely thanks to the rope. Thus, the APM is often described as “light metro” technology, in the sense that the infrastructure (viaduct, track structure, etc.) and installation are lighter and faster.

The Dominican government has set up the SITS (Santiago Integrated Transport System) to support urban development in the country’s second-largest city, Santiago de los Caballeros. A soft and sustainable mobility service accessible to all is at the heart of the project and will include a monorail, bicycles, electric buses and a nearly 4 km long 12-seater gondola lift.

A second urban cable car line has been inaugurated in Santo Domingo. This urban gondola lift incorporated into a public transport system was a world first and quickly became a model for many large cities in terms of sustainable transportation and social inclusion.
