South Korea – Yeosu – 2013

Yeosu Cablecar

Compared to the construction of a third bridge, the Yeosu gondola lift was the ideal solution to connect the island of Doslando to the mainland. Discreet, comfortable, fast and environmentally friendly, the gondola lift is perfectly suited to the city’s transportation needs.

This original voyage over the Namhae Sea also quickly won over the passengers, and the Yeosu gondola lift quickly became a major attraction in the area.

The project

Known all over the world for hosting the World Expo in 2012, the port city of Yeosu extends over a peninsula and 317 islands.

Until 2013, access to the island of Dolsando was only possible by sea shuttles or by taking two bridges that crossed the sea. Now, Yeosu residents can reach the island from the mainland on foot, quickly and without polluting. Complementary to public transport, it fits into the city's network perfectly.

Beyond its urban transport function, the Yeosu gondola lift quickly became one of the city's emblems and a tourist attraction in its own right, allowing you to reach two unmissable tourist sites.

Out of the 50 cabins that make up the ropeway, 10 grey-coloured cabins are fitted with a glass floor, allowing you to observe the landscape beneath and admire the sea that passes under your feet.

Large span

In order to cross the 664 m stretch of sea and not to disrupt the sea traffic coming and going to the port of Yeosu, the towers are spread over a total height of more than 85 metres!

Popular tourist attraction

The gondola lift provides access to Jasan Park on the mainland and Dolsan Park on Doslando Island, from which you can admire the night-lit bridge of Doslandaegyo, the longest in South Korea. Jasan Park is home to the memorial of South Korean national hero Yi Sun-sin, a world-renowned naval commander, and offers beautiful views of the sea and the tourist harbour of Yeosu.

Lit cabins

At night, the grey, red and blue cabins are lit and blend in with the arrangement of the lights on the Doslandaeygo bridge, creating a real “garland” of light in the sky of Yeosu.

Integration of stations

Stations are integrated into large modern buildings that blend into the surrounding forest. Inside and on the outskirts, the resorts offer a multitude of services appreciated by visitors: restaurants, snack establishments, souvenir shops, etc.

Olympic flame

Lit on 24 October 2017 at the site of Olympia in Greece, the Olympic flame was transported to the Yeosu gondola lift where it would take a ride on 19 November 2017. An unusual trip for the Olympic emblem, which is more traditionally held by athletes along a ground route.

The performances of the Plan Joran gondola lift make it possible to replace two 4-seater detachable chairlifts dating from 1986, to offer a capacity of 3,200 people/hour, for a journey of 2.4 km. And to conclude, I am delighted to tell you this very significant anecdote of POMA’s high concern for environmental issues:  Did you know that in order to obtain authorisation to clear the sight, pointer dogs had to be transferred to the site, with the Chamonix Hunting Federation, to confirm that no protected species of birds were present!  Operational consequences: the casting was carried out by helicopter with a large lifting sling to avoid the fir trees bordering the existing forest path!

Plan Joran gondola lift

Our ready-to-pour techniques avoid heavy installations, and the pre-assembly, which allows us to perform the tasks in the best possible ergonomic conditions, enhances safety for workers. Thus, the bottom station was built in one morning, and the top station installed without having to create an access track. We spend less time at the site, reducing exposure to risks, and allowing us to keep to our deadlines. All of these operational innovations allow us to adjust to weather uncertainties and demonstrate to our customers that we honour our commitments.  In this sense, Plan Joran is a genuine laboratory of operational innovations that required confidence and constant dialogue with our customer and the authorities concerned.

More about
